I am totally sick of companies jumping on the iPhone app bandwagon. It is getting bad in Ireland now too. RTE brought out a handful of iPhone apps, free iPhone apps. Why? Why go out and pay a company to make you an iPhone app that will only work on iPhones. I would understand it if you were going to sell this product and wanted a way to charge for the app. That would make sense, but they are not trying to do this. RTE should be working to get as many mobile users getting content directly from RTE so they can increase ad revenue. They are producing a video stream for the RTE News iPhone app that could just as easily be put in a web app that could be viewed in iPhone, Blackberry, Android, Windows Mobile or any other standards based smart phone.
I don't pretend to know the inner workings of RTE but tell me where this leads? Either everyone has to get an iPhone or RTE has to pay to write dedicated apps for all of the major phones so they have equal mobile coverage across the population.
It's not just RTE though, lots of people that are producing information that would be useful on the go (metro-herald, entertainment Ireland etc) are all making Free iPhone apps that only exclude people who don't have iPhones from their services.
Why can't you be like Goldenpages.ie? They have produced a great web app that can work on any smartphone. It will even detect your location using standard location services in HTML5. It can have all the features you would expect in an iPhone app but works on any phone with a browser.
I don't know what to do about this situation other than rant about it, but man alive it's annoying me!

NY Hockey Night
So I'm in NY at the moment for a big team sync up. Getting lots of good work done but on the social side we got a box suite for the Rangers V Phenix Ice Hockey game on Monday night in Madison Square Garden. It was a very strange event for me. Substitutions happened seemingly at random and play was stopped every few min at seemingly random intervals. Had a great time all the same. There was a great bit between periods where the "little rangers" came out for a quick game. Loads of kids came out and had a cool game of hockey on the ice.
Here are some photos and video of the night. There was a stern looking warning about not taking cameras with zoom lenses so I erred on the side of caution and stuck with the camera on my phone.

The Apple Store is TOO efficient
So I bought the wife a "surprise" christmas present of an iPod Nano from the NYC Apple store. "Oh you're such a good husband" I hear you cry. Well I used my credit card to buy the thing from the store, easy peasy. It turns out, the ever efficient apple, will look up the itunes account that your credit card is used on, and be very helpful and send a receipt to the associated email address. Unfortunately my wife used my credit card to set up HER iTunes account. So, with out asking, apple sent her the receipt for her now not a surprise christmas iPod.
I have a thing that if it's not a surprise then it's not a christmas present, so the hunt for the ideal christmas present for the wife must now start again ;)
Thanks Apple!

Breadcrumbs
So I go away for a week and come back to these signs on the route home
So, I understand that they have extra busses on this route 'cos of the rail collapse but surely there are better ways of teaching the new drivers the route other than putting these signs up all over the place. I mean if I was 15 (ish) years younger I would totally move these signs to bring the busses up some mad route where they'd get stuck...it would TOTALLY work! I'd be dropped straight to my door!
